Outokumpu sustainable stainless steel at the Wire 2012 fair

Outokumpu, a global leader in stainless steel, presents its Long Products for wire and cable users to the Wire 2012 International Wire and Cable Trade Fair held March 26–30, 2012.

High quality and high performance products are leading the way in sustainability in the stainless steel industry. For Outokumpu, sustainability is embedded in the company’s strategy.

The stainless steel product as such is fully recyclable and maintenance free. In Outokumpu operations, sustainability stands for continuous development of processes to minimise the environmental impact of production and enhancing safe and healthy workplace.

The company’s latest sustainability achievement is the CARES certification for Sustainable Reinforcing Steel granted to Outokumpu as the first stainless reinforcing steel producer. CARES UK makes a thorough assessment of a producer’s quality and environmental management systems as well as the company’s social responsibility and sustainable sourcing practices.

Compared to carbon steel rebar, stainless steel provides corrosion protection in demanding applications, such as long-life structures like temples and monuments, in marine environments, and where non-magnetic reinforcement is required.

The rebar product offering also includes advice on its specification and a full range of complementary products, including mesh and couplers.

At the fair, Outokumpu also presents its special grades, including high-performance and high-temperature austenitic grades as well as duplex grades. Long Products range comprises wire rod, bar, rebar and semi-finished products. Wire rod in coil, used to manufacture stainless steel wire and final applications, comes in an extensive range of sizes for rounds. The wire rod is complemented by flats, hexagons, squares and rebar.

The hot and cold rolled stainless steel for the construction industry have ECO EPD certificates, and they support the BREEM (UK), LEED (US) and DNGB (Germany) environmental assessment methodologies used in the construction industry today.

Outokumpu gets the first CARES certificate for sustainable reinforcing steel

Outokumpu has become the first stainless reinforcing steel producer to be granted by CARES a certificate for Sustainable Reinforcing Steel. The award was given to Outokumpu’s production unit in Sheffield, UK in February 2012.

Stainless steel has excellent properties enabling more sustainable solutions for the built environment. Green building systems are becoming more common and these schemes evolve towards more stringent requirements. Furthermore, customers and designers are increasingly asking for material and suppliers’ sustainability credentials.

CARES helps to communicate the exceptional sustainability performance of Outokumpu stainless steel reinforcement bar and contributes to the establishment of ever more sustainable construction. The CARES certification allows Outokumpu to offer stainless steel to a wider range of green specified building projects.

The CARES certificate gives us a competitive advantage as we are the first stainless reinforcement bar producer to hold this certificate,” says Dr Stephen Jones from Outokumpu.

To achieve CARES Sustainable Reinforcing Steel certification, a producer’s quality and environmental management systems are assessed, as well as the company’s social responsibility and sustainable sourcing practices.

The CARES Sustainable Reinforcing Steel certification scheme meets the requirements of British Standard BS 8902:2009 as well as a number of private and public sector sustainability initiatives. UK-based CARES is also used widely in other areas, such as Hong Kong and the Middle East.
