Successful customer survey – Donation to the Christian Psychological Service

Customers answer questions – children in the Gifhorn administrative district benefit BUTTING supports the work of the Christian Psychological Service (the CPB) in Gifhorn with a donation of EUR 1,630.



By carrying out the regular customer survey we comply with the requirements of the Standard for Quality Management DIN EN ISO 9001. The top priority for BUTTING is to satisfy the demands and expectations of our customers and partners on a long-term basis. With regard to the sought-after continuous improvement of our processes, we also discover from the survey the areas in which our customers see room for improvement. That is the way in which we will be able to continue satisfying the expectations of the market in future.

German and international customers were contacted in writing and many of them answered the questions online. To show our gratitude for taking part in the survey, BUTTING promised its customers a charitable donation for every survey form filled in and returned. Thanks to the numbers taking an active part in the customer survey, a considerable sum was collected for the donation. And now the cheque has been handed over. “Increasing prosperity in the region is not only about creating new jobs and improving wages. We also believe in supporting people for whom things are not going so well and who depend on the help of others” – that is the motto of Managing Director Hermann Butting.

The inter-denominational CPB supports such people with advice in a variety of crisis situations. The organisation, which is networked with other psycho-social institutions in the administrative district, also provides therapeutic treatment for the mentally ill.

The explicit purpose of the BUTTING donation is to improve advice and psychotherapy for children and young people. Due to high demand, the establishment of this department began in November 2010. Here the CPB depends on financial support, particularly for purchasing (play) therapy material and the other basic equipment required. Subsea 7 wins Pipeline Industries Guild Award for subsea pipeline technology

Subsea 7, a global leader in seabed-to-surface engineering, construction and services to the offshore energy industry, has won the Pipeline Industries Guild´s (PIG) 2012 Subsea Pipeline Technology Award. The award was made at the PIG National Dinner on 13 March 2012 in London´s Grosvenor House Hotel.

The award recognises Subsea 7´s technology initiative for the installation of BUTTING mechanically lined pipe (BuBi® pipe) by reel-lay. Reel-lay is a subsea pipelay method where long segments of rigid steel pipe stalks are welded, tested coated and spooled onshore onto a large pipe reel in a continuous length.

Subsea 7´s has been working with the pipe manufacturers, BUTTING, to optimise the technical and commercial benefits of using BuBi® pipe over corrosion resistant alloys and metallurgically clad pipes currently used by the industry.

The technology, independently qualified by DNV, has demonstrated its market potential and been adopted for the first major Pre-Salt project, Guará-Lula NE, in Brazil by Petrobras.

Receiving the award for Subsea 7, Global Technology Director John Mair said: "Technological developments and how we apply them to clients´projects are crucial. In this initiative we aligned with BUTTING and have developed together a world class product that can be used in some of the most demanding environments, from the North Sea to Brazil."

PIG´s Subsea Pipeline Technology Award is made annually for the most significant contribution to subsea pipeline technology. The objective is to promote the development of new ideas in the general field of subsea pipeline technology.

Subsea 7 also won the award in 2010 for the design, manufacture, testing and operation of a deepwater diverless pipeline repair system.

Immediately available: duplex pipe stock in Canada

Since 2005 BUTTING has operated a sales office in Canada. To ensure that our North American customers can access pipes in the shortest possible time, we now have a store with duplex and superduplex pipes. Our expert team based in Calgary will advise promptly and in close proximity to our customers, and the new store will satisfy your urgent requirements.

BUTTING Canada has longitudinally welded pipes in store for you in materials UNS S31803 / UNS S32205 and UNS S32750. The sizes available range from 8” to 24” in wall thicknesses 10S and 40S.

Characteristics of the duplex and superduplex pipes:

Duplex steel takes its name from its two-phase micro-structure of ferrite and austenite in approximately equal proportions. Compared to the austenite steels, duplex steels contain less nickel (approximately 4-8 %). As a result, duplex pipes are characterised by being excellent value for money: with a favourable use of material, the high-quality properties of ferrite materials are also maintained. At the same time the excellent corrosion resistance of austenite continues with duplex.

Another major project for BUTTING Anlagenbau: chemical pulp factory in Punta Pereira

In Punta Pereira, Colonia department, a new chemical pulp factory is being constructed based on a joint venture of Stora Enso and Arauco. A good performance and high flexibility during a comparable project in the years from 2006 until 2008 have for sure been important reasons for order placement of this actual Uruguayan large scale project. Even at that time BUTTING was involved in the construction of the chemical pulp factory in Fray Bentos with more than 3,500 tons of fabricated and delivered material.



For BUTTING the total order volume amounts to 50 km of pipes and 60 internal vessels. BUTTING Anlagenbau fabricates, delivers and assembles vessels and pipelines coming up to approx. 80 per cent of the overall required raw material.

BUTTING delivers the material (pipes and fittings) for the pipeline bridges and equips the pulp pipeline and the drying line with vessels and pipes. In this area also prefabrication of the pipelines and the subsequent assembly on site will be assumed. The appropriate pipes have been produced in Knesebeck production, prefabricated in Schwedt works since December 2011 and will be assembled at Uruguay location starting the second quarter 2012.

For installation of the delivered parts, we actually calculate with 210 fitters in Punta Pereira – an internationally mixed team led by an experienced BUTTING management team. This order is highly sophisticated not only for the reason of a high capacity. “An on-schedule supply and a smooth organization at site – at a distance of more than 11 000 kms – require a logistical master accomplishment” Debora Stimpel says. She works in a leading position on this project. “Another problem that cannot be influenced can be founded in the highly unsteady weather conditions at the location – semi-tropical rainstorms are no curiosity”, she supplements.

Biggest single order in history: 84 km clad pipes for Brazil

BUTTING has won the biggest single order in its 230 year history. The order, from Subsea 7, a global leader in seabed-to-surface engineering, construction and services to the offshore industry, is for 84 km of clad pipes for the Guará-Lula NE field project in Brazil.

The Guará-Lula NE fields are part of the largest pre-salt oil fields discovered by Petrobras in the Santos basin off the coast of Brazil. Exploration will take place in the coming years, under extremely technically challenging conditions: more than 6,000 feet below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean. To date, the US $ 1 billion SURF (subsea umbilical, riser and flowlines) project awarded to Subsea 7, for four decoupled riser systems to be installed in the Guarà-Lula NE is the largest engineering, procurement, installation and commissioning (EPIC) contract awarded to date in Brazil.

The risers for the production, gas and water supply pipes will be equipped by Subsea 7 from the buoys with BuBi® pipes and clad pipes from Knesebeck. As the BUTTING pipes will be used in the demanding conditions of the seabed and around 750 feet below the surface of the water, the clad pipes must be fabricated to very strict tolerance standards.

For BUTTING, the order means delivering a total of more than 75 km of BuBi® pipes and 9 km of metallurgically clad pipes. Because of these conditions, the material combination of Grade 450 and Alloy 625 was selected.

Before the order was awarded, it was vital to ensure the reel capability of the mechanically clad pipes. Subsea 7 and BUTTING set up a joint comprehensive programme to develop the technology and demonstrate its suitability. This was accredited last year by independent institutions. Thus, these projects will for the first time see the laying of the BuBi® pipes by Subsea 7 using the reel-lay process. The mechanically clad pipe was technologically certified by the DNV under DNV RP A-203 for this special use.

Production will begin in Knesebeck in July 2011, and the first pipes are to be delivered in November 2011.

20 years of laser manufacturing at BUTTING

BUTTING is popping champagne corks to celebrate a special anniversary: For the past 20 years, laser technology has been successfully used in Knesebeck. Burkhard Mühe, departmental manager of the steel coil pipe production line, invited the employees to a small ceremony.

In 1990, the then management took a major chance calling on a great deal of courage and a passion for technology and invested in the innovative technology of laser welding. Within a short period, a supplier of laser technology was found, building measures introduced and training carried out for employees. Only a few months later, BUTTING put into service one of Europe’s first pipe welding equipment with laser technology. After a few test runs, pipes were welded with the laser for the first time at the end of 1991 for a customer order. Burkhard Mühe remembers: “During the first year, production was only carried out at night in order to keep electricity costs low.”

Within a few years, laser technology was being used in many production areas in Knesebeck. People are convinced by laser welding particularly because it reduces the thermal zone of influence and the resulting component distortion. The benefits for our customers are also reproducibility and a high degree of cost-effectiveness. Thus, we can implement your demanding requirements, from the food and chemical industries in particular, e. g. pipes and components absolutely free of undercuts.

Today, BUTTING also has a laser centre with state-of-the-art 4 to 11 axial CNC machines. Laser technology opens up many options for targeted project work both in relation to welding pipes and contour cuts to manufacture assembly components.

Various production lines equipped with the newest generation of welding and cutting lasers are used at BUTTING each day. To date, more than 18,000 km of pipes have been produced on the production line which was one of the first to have been equipped with laser technology.

500 tonnes of thick-walled steel plate pipes for a refinery in Russia

BUTTING was able to secure a major order for 500 tonnes of thick-walled steel plate pipes this month. The pipes will be used to expand a refinery in Russia.

BUTTING will start production in December this year. From February 2012 we will be delivering around 300 m of pipes to the Republic of Tatarstan every week. The refinery of the TANECO project company is located approx. 200 km to the east of the capital, Kazan.

Along with the expansion of the crude oil refinery, the overall project also includes a petrochemical production complex. As soon as the reconstruction of the refinery has been completed, it will be possible to process around 14 million tonnes of crude oil there per annum.

For the order we will produce four different objects from the TP321 material in accordance with ASTM A358. The pipes have external diameters ranging between 457 and 660 mm. A particularly demanding feature is the great wall thicknesses ranging between 40.5 and 57 mm. In order to produce the longitudinally welded pipes, we use the efficient electron beam welding process which is deployed highly effectively by us, one of the few pipe manufacturers in Europe to do so.

Pigging technology – the need for quality products

Recently BUTTING received its largest order in the company’s history to date in the field of pigging technology, from a German manufacturer of fittings for pigging systems. We were given the order to produce pipes and elbows according to DIN 2430 to complete a paint factory in India.

BUTTING will manufacture a total of more than 7 000 m of pipes and 230 elbows of material 1.4307. The processor of stainless steel will supply the piggable components in sizes from DN 40 to DN 100 by the end of this year at the latest.

Pigging technology has succeeded in establishing itself more and more in the chemical industry in recent years. “The benefits of piggable pipes speak for themselves: only very slight mixing in the paint area and a distinct reduction in expenditure on the cleaning process,” is how Gordon Behne, of Pipe Technology Sales, explains the increased use of piggable systems. There are very special requirements on the welded components of pigging technology: very small deviations in the internal diameter, minimal wall thickness tolerances, smooth surfaces and weld seams without elevations. As a manufacturer, BUTTING guarantees the implementation of these high quality requirements.
