Financial crisis, energy transition and climate change

In a few weeks' time the international wind industry will be converging on Husum for the HUSUM WindEnergy 2012 Trade Fair. From 18th to 22nd September, 1200 exhibitors and 36,000 visitors from more than 90 countries will ensure that this North Frisian town becomes the central hub of the wind industry, and the trade fair the largest since the inception of HUSUM WindEnergy. Around three billion Euros were invested in wind energy last year, the second highest sum spent within the renewable energies sector in Germany. But the current financial crisis is slowing down the expansion of wind energy. Even energy providers, construction companies and other major players who were pushing onto the offshore market are postponing the realization of their projects. This is due, among other things, to the uncertainties on the global finance markets which have meant that there has been insufficient investment in the climate-protection technologies necessary for the energy transition. Can the CO2 reduction goals be met under these conditions - or is the financial crisis impeding the struggle against climate change?

These are the topics which will be discussed at the 11th windcommunity treffen (windcommunity meeting) to be held on 20th September 2012 during the HUSUM WindEnergy fair. The meeting begins at 16:00 h in the NordseeCongressCentrum (NCC). The panel discussion will be led by Dr. Klaus Rave, Chairman of the Board of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). The people on the panel will be Prof. Dr. Kay Emeis, head of the Institute of Coastal Research at Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, Andreas Nauen, Chairman of the Board of Repower Systems SE and Ingrid Nestle, Undersecretary in Schleswig-Holstein's Energy Transition Ministry. Alistair Tarwid, the bilingual actor and interpreter, will then give a humorous talk on the topic of energy transition. Registration for the 11th windcommunity treffen is free of charge for visitors and exhibitors at the Husum Trade Fair. Please register at www.windcomm.de or www.husumwindenergy.com.

The windcommunity schleswig-holstein is a cooperative association which was formed between the research association CEwind e.G., the Investment Bank (Investitionsbank) of Schleswig-Holstein, Messegesellschaft Husum and the network agency windcomm schleswig-holstein to provide and expand national and international networking opportunities for Schleswig-Holstein's wind sector.
