The Finnish technology company Coolbrook, which specializes in industrial electrification, and Tenova, a leading provider of sustainable solutions for the metals and mining industries, have announced a strategic partnership. The collaboration aims to utilize Coolbrook’s proprietary RotoDynamic Heater™ (RDH™) technology to replace fossil fuels with clean electricity in high-temperature processes used in metal production.
This partnership brings together two complementary areas of expertise: Coolbrook contributes its know-how in electrifying high-temperature industrial processes, while Tenova brings extensive experience in sustainable plant engineering. Together, the companies intend to develop fully electrified and decarbonized solutions for various applications in the iron, steel, and broader metals industries, with the goal of significantly reducing CO₂ emissions.
Initial Project Focus: Acid Regeneration Plant Integration
The first joint project will focus on integrating RDH™ technology into Tenova’s proprietary acid regeneration plant systems. Following this initial phase, the collaboration will be expanded to include further applications throughout the metals sector. The goal is to create seamless, end-to-end technological solutions that provide industrial customers with comprehensive and high-performance systems.
Antonio Catalano, Executive Vice President of Tenova’s Downstream Business Unit, emphasized:
“At Tenova, we are committed to driving the metals industries towards a more sustainable future. Our collaboration with Coolbrook marks a key milestone in decarbonizing high-temperature industrial processes by combining Coolbrook’s innovative RDH™ technology with our advanced solutions. By replacing fossil fuels with renewable electricity, we can dramatically reduce CO₂ emissions but also achieve a significant step in process efficiency – making production cleaner, faster, and more cost-effective. This is a powerful example of how technological innovation can accelerate both sustainability and operational excellence in our industry.”
Joonas Rauramo, CEO of Coolbrook, also highlighted the importance of the partnership:
“Our partnership with Tenova is a significant step in advancing industrial electrification and accelerating the transition to clean energy. By integrating our RDH technology with Tenova’s innovative solutions, we can develop joint offerings to decarbonize highly challenging applications that have previously been impossible to electrify. Through this partnership, we are positioned to deliver broader, more sophisticated solutions to our customers than either company could achieve independently. Our partnership with Tenova is a key milestone in our strategy to establish a strong and collaborative ecosystem around Coolbrook’s RotoDynamic technology, ensuring its rapid industrial-scale adoption.”
RDH™ Technology Poised to Become New Industry Standard
Coolbrook’s RDH™ technology represents a groundbreaking innovation that enables high-temperature industrial process heating using CO₂-free electricity. Capable of reaching temperatures up to 1700 °C, this technology marks a critical breakthrough for decarbonizing processes that have traditionally relied on fossil fuels. Large-scale pilot tests have already demonstrated the system’s effectiveness at temperatures above 1000 °C.
According to Coolbrook, wide-scale implementation of this technology could reduce global CO₂ emissions by over 2.4 billion tons annually – a major step toward a climate-neutral industrial sector. The company aims to establish RDH™ as the new industry standard by 2030.
