Denmark and North Rhine-Westphalia are extending their cooperation on heat transition by three years. The aim is to harness the expertise of Danish energy policy for the implementation of municipal heat plans and industrial decarbonisation in North Rhine-Westphalia. The partnership is supported by NRW.Energy4Climate and the Danish Energy Agency.
The cooperation focuses on digitalisation, sector coupling and practice-oriented projects. Municipalities and utilities in both countries have already been intensively exchanging experiences on district heating technologies and heat planning. In the new phase, the focus will now be on specific implementation issues, such as the planning and financing of heating networks, operator models and the use of digital tools for more efficient networks.
„North Rhine-Westphalia and Denmark are taking responsibility for a bright future without fossil fuels. With our partnership, we are focusing on innovative solutions for the heating transition and a climate-neutral industry“, emphasises Christian Mildenberger, Managing Director of NRW.Energy4Climate. „The cooperation with Denmark helps us to quickly put proven technologies and efficient approaches into practice. In this way, we are accelerating the transformation of industry and making the heat transition economically viable.“
Specialist conferences, delegation trips and webinars are planned to develop joint solutions. Denmark's pioneering role in waste heat utilisation and process heat serves as a model here. Initial projects in North Rhine-Westphalia demonstrate the transferability of these solutions: in Siegen-Wittgenstein, investigations are underway into how industrial waste heat can be integrated into the heat supply in future. In the Duisburg area, too, cooperation between industry and energy suppliers is underway to utilise process heat based on Danish experience.
