According to a press release from 9 April, numerous projects are currently being rolled out as part of the FTTH fibre optic expansion in the district of Osterholz: Lilienthal, Worpswede, Grasberg, Osterholz-Scharmbeck, Ritterhude, Schwanewede and the joint municipality of Hambergen. A total of over 300,000 metres of fibre optic cable will be laid, which will ensure private-sector coverage for over 26,000 households. The total investment volume amounts to 60 million euros.
„The current market environment with high interest rates, increased costs and scarce construction capacity is currently posing challenges for the entire industry. Despite these conditions, we are keeping up the pace of expansion in the district of Osterholz“, said Gerda Meppelink from Deutsche Glasfaser today, Tuesday, at the 13th Municipal Broadband Marketplace event in the Osterholz-Scharmbeck town hall. „The private sector is still the driving force, especially when it comes to fibre optic expansion in rural areas. Deutsche Glasfaser has already built over 450,000 fibre optic connections in the state of Lower Saxony alone. And we are planning to make half a million more households and companies in the state fit for the digital future“, she continued
Promoting sustainable technologies and fair competition
Lower Saxony's Minister of Economic Affairs and Digitalisation, Olaf Lies, welcomed the expansion project: „The fact that Osterholz is succeeding with its own expansion is crucial for its future viability. There is no way around the switch from the old copper networks to future-proof technologies, in particular fibre optic networks. I value the lively, fair competition that we have and maintain in the telecommunications market in Lower Saxony. Deutsche Glasfaser's expansion project is a successful example of this market and the good cooperation between industry and the public sector [...].“
In September last year, Economics Minister Olaf Lies and Deutsche Glasfaser signed a cooperation agreement with the aim of improving the fibre optic supply, intensifying cooperation between the company and the state and further accelerating the expansion in Lower Saxony. This is now bearing fruit in the district of Osterholz, among others.
