Last week, EWE employees completed the last weld seam of the Wilhelmshaven-Leer (GWL) gas connection in the future pipeline construction project. The H2-ready pipeline is now technically complete and is scheduled to go into operation at the beginning of 2024.
Last Thursday (December 14), the last of around 5,000 welds was completed on the EWE pipeline of the future near the town of Westerstede. This was followed by the technical acceptance of the gas pipeline by independent experts.
The pipeline runs from the LNG terminal in Wilhelmshaven to the natural gas storage facilities in Leer in East Frisia. According to EWE, it consists of around 4,200 pipes welded together with a total length of around 70 km.
It will supply over 4 million households. According to EWE, residual and dismantling work as well as recultivation measures will be carried out along the route after commissioning.
Initially, regasified LNG is to be transported via the pipeline from the beginning of 2024. This will be handled by the pipeline operator, GTG Nord, the long-distance gas network operator in the EWE Group. From 2027, the transport of hydrogen is then planned, which is to land at the Wilhelmshaven LNG terminal in the form of ammonia, for example.
