N-ERGIE Netz GmbH is expanding its medium-voltage grid in Nuremberg. In January 2024, Ernst und Ludwig Langguth GmbH from Eckental began laying 20 kV cables along a 6 km stretch. The aim is to equip the grid for SiCrystal GmbH's increasing electricity requirements. Langguth was awarded the contract for all three lots and was able to successfully realise the project thanks to sufficient capacity and flexibility.
SiCrystal, a leading manufacturer of silicon carbide semiconductor wafers, requires a power increase of 24 MVA for the expansion of its production area. To realise this, the route was laid through the north-east of Nuremberg. The construction work extended from Thurn- und Taxisstraße via several other streets to the transformer station in Hornecker Weg. This involved laying 20 kV cables, installing joints and terminations and installing cable conduits. Old low-voltage cables were also replaced.
Special requirements mastered well
Despite the challenging conditions, the project was realised within the planned time frame. Hans-Jürgen Fink and Fabian Schirm, site manager at N-ERGIE Netz GmbH, recalled that the feasibility of realising the project in the short time available was checked at the beginning. Langguth had the necessary experience and capacity to compensate for delays in one construction phase by carrying out parallel work in other areas.
The cables were laid in accordance with regulations, utilising existing routes. Old cables were removed or temporarily relocated. Drum boxes ensured that the cables were installed safely, allowing them to be laid in an organised and damage-free manner. After installation, the cables were professionally insulated.
Thanks to precise planning and good cooperation, the project was completed on schedule at the end of October 2024.
