Salzgitter's hot strip mill is now equipped with new process technology that is characterized by new control concepts and self-optimizing control. After a comprehensive mechatronic modernization of the hot strip mill, Salzgitter will now equip it with control systems and process models from the SMS group's X-Pact® product family.
In addition to the X-Pact® Integrated Temperature Model, this also includes numerous new functions and a harmonized tool environment on state-of-the-art automation platforms. This self-optimizing process control combines all process steps into a higher-level temperature model and generates comprehensive recommendations to improve the product quality and productivity of the system.
The X-Pact® Integrated Temperature Model enables energy consumption-oriented operating modes and the advance calculation of complete rolling programs. This particularly supports the production of high-quality and temperature-sensitive steels with overall improved product properties. At the same time, the X-Pact® Plant Pacing system optimizes the throughput and productivity of the entire plant.
“It was and is crucial for Salzgitter to have a partner who is not only technically convincing, but also offers the prospect of developing together beyond the current state of the art. In addition to the right commercial framework, we found this combination of technical excellence and shared growth prospects at SMS,” explains Achim Pekrul, project manager at Salzgitter.
The integrated belt guidance control X-Pact® Centerline Control is also part of the SMS scope of delivery. Using the X-Pact® Sense hotCAM camera system, this system detects deviations in the strip run and calculates correction signals for each roll stand. This significantly reduces manual interventions by operating personnel to avoid unplanned downtimes and disruptions. The new X-Pact® PEAK control concept, which enables capacity and productivity increases in the rolling mill, rounds off the technology package for Salzgitter Flachstahl.
The hot strip mill is a central part of the production process at Salzgitter Flachstahl. As a partner for integrated lifecycle services, SMS group makes a significant contribution to the technological and process development of the plant on the way to more sustainable, profitable and self-optimizing operation.
