"HyPipe Bavaria - The Hydrogen Hub" listed as a Project of Common Interest by the EU Commission
With the HyPipe Bavaria - The Hydrogen Hub project, bayernets is setting the course for Bavaria's hydrogen imports, for the diversification of the German hydrogen supply and for the creation of a European hydrogen hub. The project will be around 300 km long and will transport hydrogen from the Burghausen import point on the border between Austria and Bavaria to the gates of Munich and on to Ingolstadt in the north and south-west of Germany.
In November, the European Commission published a list in the form of a delegated act, which includes HyPipe Bavaria - The Hydrogen Hub as a "project of common interest" (PCI) in Western and Eastern Europe. Projects listed as PCIs can benefit from an accelerated authorisation procedure and, under certain conditions, from European funding.
Major importance of the project for European hydrogen supply
The infrastructure project is an important part of the German hydrogen core network and the European Hydrogen Backbone (EHB) and connects hydrogen demand regions with numerous production regions in Germany and abroad. It is essential for the hydrogen supply from Western and Eastern Europe. HyPipe Bavaria - The Hydrogen Hub is part of the "Hydrogen Corridor Italy-Austria-Germany", the so-called SoutH2 Corridor, as well as the corridor via Slovakia and Austria for the supply of hydrogen from Ukraine. This confirms its function as a hub for the European hydrogen supply by the EU Commission.
SoutH2 Corridor in particular lays the foundation for diversifying the hydrogen supply in southern Germany. The southern hydrogen corridor already received political support from the energy ministries of Italy, Austria and Germany as well as the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs in the spring. At the German-Italian government consultations on 22 November 2023, Germany and Italy reaffirmed their cooperation to diversify the energy supply and develop new hydrogen connections between Germany and Italy.
SoutH2 Corridor: Completion of a total of four individual TSO projects planned by 2030
With a planned length of 3,300 km, the corridor, which should be fully operational by 2030, consists of the following individual PCI projects from various transmission system operators (TSOs)
- "HyPipe Bavaria - The Hydrogen Hub" from bayernets GmbH
- "H2 Backbone WAG + Penta-West" from Gas Connect Austria GmbH
- "H2 Readiness of the TAG pipeline system" by Trans Austria Gasleitung GmbH
- "Italian H2 Backbone" from Snam Rete Gas
SoutH2 thus connects North Africa, Italy, Austria and Germany and is intended to supply important European demand clusters with competitive renewable hydrogen from the southern Mediterranean region.
