Interpipe is moving ahead with plans to increase production at its seamless steel pipe plant in Roman, Romania. According to Romanian media reports, the Ukrainian steel pipe and railway product manufacturer is seeking a loan of up to €20 million from the Black Sea Trade and Development Bank (BSTDB) to support the development of the facility.
The former ArcelorMittal Tubular Products (AMTP) Roman plant was acquired by Interpipe in early April 2026 following an agreement signed in December 2025. Renamed Interpipe Roman, the facility resumed production at its 16-inch plug mill on April 14 after a short delay caused by insufficient billet inventories.
Three seamless pipe rolling lines offer expansion potential
Interpipe has begun evaluating and modernising production processes at the Romanian site. The plant is equipped with three seamless pipe rolling lines, although only one had been operating in recent years. Depending on market conditions, Interpipe intends to gradually bring the other lines back into production and increase overall output.
Initially, the company is concentrating on optimising the existing equipment and securing higher volumes of semi-finished steel products. According to Interpipe CEO Luca Zanotti, the pace at which rolling and finishing operations are expanded will depend on market demand.
Further investment decisions are expected after a more detailed assessment of the production assets, product quality and customer response.
Own steel to supply Romanian pipe production
Interpipe is also working to strengthen the integration of the Roman plant into its existing production network. Billets are currently supplied both by Interpipe Steel in Ukraine and by external producers.
At the same time, the company is investing in its steelmaking operations in Dnipro with the objective of eventually supplying 100 percent of the Romanian plant’s steel requirements from its own production.
The strategy would give Interpipe greater control over the steel supply for its Romanian seamless pipe operations while supporting the planned ramp-up in production.
In 2025, Interpipe supplied 470,000 tonnes of steel pipes and 89,000 tonnes of railway products to customers.
