LISI AUTOMOTIVE, together with ArcelorMittal, has announced the signing of a strategic partnership. The goal of this collaboration is to push the boundaries of sustainability and efficiency in the automotive industry through the development and integration of XCarb® recycled and renewably manufactured steel into manufacturing processes.
Climate neutrality
By 2050, ArcelorMittal is committed to achieving carbon neutrality and reducing CO2 emissions by 35% in Europe by 2030. ArcelorMittal's XCarb® initiative aims to combine ArcelorMittal's products and steelmaking into carbon-neutral steel. This initiative is perfectly aligned with LISI AUTOMOTIVE's vision of sustainability and environmental responsibility. Together, the two companies aim to reduce the automotive industry's carbon footprint while improving product quality and performance.
Through their partnership, LISI AUTOMOTIVE and ArcelorMittal plan to develop innovative components and assembly systems using recycled and renewably manufactured XCarb® steel products, which will ultimately significantly reduce CO2 emissions associated with vehicle manufacturing.
Less emissions from steel production
At its factories in Hamburg and Warsaw, ArcelorMittal can produce wire rod with CO2 emissions of less than 700 kg per ton of steel, saving up to 70% of CO2 emissions compared to traditional production methods based on the blast furnace route. With the innovative DRI route of steel production, which is a key element of ArcelorMittal's decarbonization strategy, the carbon footprint of products is reduced even further.
XCarb® recycled and renewably manufactured steel is designed to have low CO2 emissions, be strong and fully meet the high safety and performance standards of the automotive industry.
“This partnership is a new step for the automotive industry, where durability and performance go hand in hand. Together with ArcelorMittal, we are committed to pushing the boundaries of innovation to create solutions that benefit the planet and future generations,” explains Francois Liotard, CEO of LISI AUTOMOTIVE.
Collaboration in harmony
For LISI AUTOMOTIVE, the partnership is in line with the goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 30% (for Scope 1, 2 and 3a) by 2030. Purchasing recycled and renewably produced XCarb® steel means a reduction of up to 45% of LISI AUTOMOTIVE's carbon emissions associated with the purchase of raw materials from ArcelorMittal and a gross reduction of up to 10,000 tons of CO2e (equivalent to emissions of 10,000 trips between Paris and New York for one passenger).
“ArcelorMittal is at the forefront of developing low carbon steel products. Our goal is to further reduce CO2 emissions to achieve carbon neutrality and help our customers achieve their goals. We are therefore very pleased that we are now starting our collaboration and partnership with LISI AUTOMOTIVE! This is another important step towards a green industrial future,” said Tapas Rajderkar, CMO of ArcelorMittal Europe - Long Products.
