In 2025, Tosyalı Algérie A.Ş. set a new world record in the production of direct reduced iron (DRI). With its second direct reduction module, the company achieved an impressive output of 2.43 million tonnes of DRI in its first year of operation – the highest annual production ever recorded by a single direct reduction module, setting a new global benchmark.
In the same year, Tosyalı Algérie’s first direct reduction module also delivered outstanding results. It ranked third worldwide in annual DRI production, further underscoring the significance and performance of the facility.
“On behalf of SMS group, I congratulate Tosyalı Algérie on this outstanding achievement. We are proud that our technical expertise has supported this milestone and contributed to a project that enhances Algeria’s steel production capacities and supports the industry’s ongoing decarbonization efforts,” said Thomas Hansmann, Chief Technology Officer at SMS.
Technical Background and Flexibility
The record-breaking plant was supplied by Midrex Technologies, Inc. together with consortium partner Paul Wurth, a company of the SMS group. The MIDREX® technology used in this plant enables the production of both hot direct reduced iron (HDRI) and cold direct reduced iron (CDRI), providing a high level of operational flexibility and efficiency.
Commenting on the achievement, Fuat Tosyalı, Chairman of the Board of Tosyalı Holding, stated: “As one of the world’s leading green steel producers, we continue our investments in direct reduced iron (DRI) production at our facility in Algeria, thereby reducing CO₂ emissions. Since 2020, our Tosyalı Algérie plant has broken the world DRI production record every year. In addition to the record set by our second module, our first DRI module also delivered a strong performance in 2025, ranking third globally in annual DRI production, further confirming the scalability and consistency of our twin-DRI strategy.”
The second module is considered the world’s first commercial direct reduction plant that, following a minor modification, can be operated with both natural gas and 100 percent hydrogen – an important step toward more sustainable steel production.
“We congratulate Tosyalı Algérie on this outstanding achievement in its first year of operation,” said KC Woody, President and CEO of Midrex Technologies. “Reaching a new global benchmark so quickly is a powerful testament to Tosyalı’s operational excellence and to the industry-leading productivity, reliability, and flexibility of MIDREX technology. We are confident that Tosyalı will exceed its nominal capacity very soon.”
Significance for Algeria and the Industry
This record not only strengthens Tosyalı’s position as a major producer of “green” steel, but also reinforces Algeria’s role in the global steel industry. The high production output contributes to supplying the domestic market while simultaneously enabling increased exports to international markets.
