The Feralpi Group and Feralpi Stahl showed customers and partners insights into the innovative project at the Riesa site: the Scope 1 emission-free spooler rolling mill, which will go into operation at the end of 2024.
Feralpi Stahl's portfolio was also expanded with a new product. A hot-rolled coil can be rolled emission-free in the new spooler rolling mill. It is offered with a weight of 2.5 to 8 tons and dimensions of 8 to 25 millimeters. The market launch is planned for early 2025.
“By 2026, more than 220 million euros will be invested in our electric steelworks in Riesa, Saxony, almost 100 percent from our own resources. In total, the Feralpi Group will invest more than 500 million euros by 2027, mostly in technologies. For us, this is a clear commitment that – despite all the difficulties – we believe in the future of the energy-intensive industry in Europe and Germany,” says Giuseppe Pasini, President of the Feralpi Group.
Uwe Reinecke, General Manager Feralpi Stahl, adds:
“In order to continue successfully on our path to green steel, the rapid expansion of renewable energies in Germany is a must. This calculation shows that: If we could cover our electricity needs completely with renewables, our CO2 emissions, Scope 1 and Scope 2, would drop by around 90 percent in one fell swoop - without any further investments in our factory.”
Further development at Feralpi
Steel is one of the few materials that can be reused infinitely with virtually no loss. Feralpi Stahl's electrical steelworks in Riesa produces its end product, structural steel, almost 100 percent from scrap. This makes Feralpi Stahl one of the largest recycling companies in Saxony.
One of the company's major transformations is underway. In addition to the already completed first project phase of the new scrap processing and a new substation, the entire focus is currently on the completion of the new, emission-free second rolling mill.
It will make it possible to increase production capacity from one million tons of steel per year to around 1.3 million tons in the future. The commissioning will also create around 100 additional industrial jobs in Riesa. An adapted logistics concept rounds off the investment projects - all with the aim of further advancing decarbonization at the site and being able to produce green steel in Riesa in the future.
