Primetals Technologies recently commissioned the world's largest push-pull pickling line (PPPL) at the steel mill of Chinese steel manufacturer HBIS Tangsteel in Laoting, Hebei Province, China. The first pickled coil was successfully produced in December 2023. Primetals Technologies delivered the complete mechanical, electrical and automation technology scope of delivery and was responsible for the engineering and advice on implementation.
Large product range
Primetals Technologies' push-pull pickling line has the main goal of enabling an extraordinarily wide product range in terms of strip dimensions, steel grade properties and production capacity. This is typically achieved by operating a conventional continuous pickling line and a PPPL in parallel. The PPPL from Primetals Technologies therefore offers a clear flexibility advantage over conventional push-pull pickling lines.
The PPPL from HBIS Tangsteel has a built-in quarto leveling stand. A flatness control system adjusts the mechanical properties by allowing controlled stretching. Thanks to the skin pass stand, the PPPL operators have even more control over the flatness of the strip.
Throughput at the maximum level
HBIS Tangsteel employees now have a comprehensive overview of all aspects of the process and can control it with extreme precision. They are supported by an innovative solution for the automated analysis and control of the pickling process. As part of the comprehensive Level 2 automation solution, the system is supported by a sophisticated pickling software model that takes into account numerous parameters related to the incoming tape. It is designed to ensure optimal operating conditions in terms of temperature, pickling level, flow and turbulence. The use of the pickling model leads to a significant increase in throughput capacity while ensuring optimal use of energy and minimal consumption of pickling liquid.
The PPPL also has a turret trimming system that processes thicknesses from two to eight millimeters. This highly effective trimmer increases throughput and maximizes strip edge quality.
