At its steelworks in Dangjin in western South Korea, Hyundai Steel has once again implemented Eco Slide Discs from Primetals Technologies, after equipping the decoiler No. 1 of the hot strip mill with this new solution in 2019. Hyundai Steel has now been able to convince itself of the advantages of the Eco Slide Discs and commissioned the steel manufacturer Primetals Technologies with a further installation for the second decoiler.
Cost reduction through Eco Slide Discs
Two Eco-Slide side guides with rotating discs, disc drives and two guide beams were supplied by Primetals Technologies. Instead of changing and servicing the side guides every two days as with conventional solutions, Hyundai Steel now achieves maintenance intervals of six weeks to several months, which means a significant reduction in maintenance costs.
Extended lifespan and better band quality
Conventional wear strips are designed in such a way that the band cut always occurs in the same place. Eco Slide Discs, on the other hand, distribute wear evenly over the entire ring surface. This increases the service life and availability of the entire side guide with the corresponding operational advantages for Hyundai Steel. The basic principle of the cyclically rotating discs enables the side guides to clean themselves, which prevents belt surface defects caused by falling material adhesions. In addition, the regular rotation of the disc eliminates the need for manual cleaning to avoid strip edge melting. And finally, the uniform disc wear reduces the risk of strip edge defects and incorrect rolling due to worn guide grooves.
Improved operational safety
In addition, the new discs eliminate the need for time-consuming inspections and repairs involving welding and grinding work, which are required when using conventional wear plates. The elimination of inline activities also increases the safety of the operating personnel on the hot strip mill.
