At the beginning of March 2024, the steel trader and project management provider Steelaris Pte Ltd. from Singapore, Salzgitter Mannesmann International GmbH and Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
Steelaris
Steelaris supplies steel products and services for the construction, offshore and marine industries to customers in Singapore and ASEAN. In the future, Steelaris will purchase CO2-reduced SALCOS® steel from the Salzgitter Group via Salzgitter Mannesmann International GmbH in order to counteract the European CO2 tax that will take effect in 2026 and to meet Singapore's commitment to climate neutrality by 2050.

In April 2024, the first 380 t of hot-rolled sheets are expected to be delivered by the sister company Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH from Salzgitter Mannsmann International GmbH. The CO2-reduced SALCOS® steel comes from Peinerträger GmbH. The slabs are already being produced there from high-quality steel scrap using an electric arc furnace and continuous casting system.
Salzgitter
In the future, the Salzgitter Group will gradually convert its steel production to hydrogen-based processes with the transformation program SALCOS® - Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking. The goal is almost CO2-free production, starting in 2026. The classic blast furnace route is to be replaced by the production route via direct reduction and electric arc furnaces.
“We feel honored to be embarking on this 'green journey' together with the Salzgitter Group. Steelaris is very confident that with this collaboration and a global network of partners, we will be able to build a sustainable steel supply chain that will benefit all our customers. We look forward to working closely together and supplying even more CO2-reduced SALCOS® steel to our customers in the offshore, energy, construction and shipbuilding industries. The path to sustainability and green steel receives a decisive impetus with this cooperation between our two companies,” says ANG Tee Seng, Managing Director of Steelaris.
“Through the cooperation with Steelaris, we have managed to build a bridge between Europe and Asia. With Steelaris we have found a partner who, like us, not only values sustainability but also quality - a “match” for both parties. We are very pleased to have achieved this through the excellent collaboration with our colleagues in the group,” explains Alexander Soboll, Managing Director of Salzgitter Mannesmann International GmbH.
