For the first time, the Salzgitter Group is supplying SALCOS® steel to Allied Steelrode and Malben Engineering in South Africa for testing purposes. These companies are the first automotive suppliers in South Africa to use CO2-reduced steel for the vehicle production of their customers. The SALCOS® steel has received the necessary approvals, was packaged in an environmentally friendly manner, and transported with reduced CO2 emissions.
Collaboration under the SALCOS® program
As part of the SALCOS® program, Salzgitter Flachstahl and Salzgitter Mannesmann International are working together with Allied Steelrode and Malben Engineering along the value chain to promote sustainable automotive production using low-CO2 steel products. "This collaboration supports the sustainability goals and associated innovations in the automotive industry as well as among its suppliers," explains Alexander Soboll, Managing Director of Salzgitter Mannesmann International GmbH.
Allied Steelrode, one of the leading steel service centers in South Africa, processed the supplied steel. Malben Engineering, with 50 years of experience as a Tier-1 supplier to various OEMs, manufactures parts and components from the SALCOS® material.
SALCOS® stands for "Salzgitter Low CO2 Steelmaking," a transformation program, and is also the brand name for CO2-reduced steel grades produced in-house by the company. The steel supplied to South Africa is produced via the electric steelmaking route using green electricity and high-quality steel scrap.
Goal of this initiative
The goal of this initiative is to strengthen Allied Steelrode and Malben Engineering as leading suppliers for sustainable automotive production and to pave the way for a more environmentally friendly future in the automotive industry.
