Tenaris delivers record-breaking coiled tubing string for US shale market

Coiled tubing plays a critical role in post-fracturing well operations by enabling the removal of composite plugs and debris left in the well after stimulation. A larger diameter allows for the use of higher-capacity tools, enhancing flow rates and cleaning efficiency. At the same time, the trend toward longer laterals continues, requiring longer coiled tubing strings to reach further into the well.

The project began in August 2024 with a specific request from Cudd to produce the largest heat-treated coiled tubing in the US market. The result was not only the largest but also the heaviest BlueCoil® string ever produced.

“We challenged Tenaris to deliver something that had never been done before, and they delivered. This BlueCoil® string gives us the reach and performance we need for the most demanding shale wells in the US land market. It’s a game changer for our coiled tubing operations,” says Brandon Pugh, Operations Manager at Cudd Pressure Control.

Vastly field-proven, with more than 1,500 strings deployed since its launch in 2015, BlueCoil® technology delivers enhanced fatigue resistance, increased strength, and greater reliability to enable a longer string life than conventional coiled tubing.

“This project reflects the kind of partnership we strive for, where technical excellence and commercial alignment come together to solve real challenges in the field. The scale and performance of this BlueCoil® string will open new possibilities for our coiled tubing division. We are very excited to see this string get into service,” adds Christopher Schneider, Senior Director of Corporate Business Development at Cudd Pressure Control.

“From the initial concept to final delivery, every step was driven by Cudd’s operational requirements. This is a clear example of how we can translate customer needs into engineered solutions,” shares Martín Urcola, Coiled Tubes VP at Tenaris.

“Meeting their order requirements was no small feat. It demanded close collaboration with our Operations, Supply Chain, and Technology teams to meet the technical and logistical demands of the project,” explains Brandon Henderson, Sales Manager for Coiled Tubes at Tenaris.

After months of planning and preparations across all departments, the string was produced in April and delivered in May for use in the Eagle Ford and Permian Basins.
