Welspun Corp Limited and Perma-Pipe International Holdings have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the developers of Jordan’s National Water Carrier Project to evaluate the establishment of pipe manufacturing and coating facilities in the country.
The proposed project would combine Welspun Corp’s expertise in the production of large-diameter steel pipes with Perma-Pipe’s anti-corrosion coating technologies. The facilities are intended to serve major pipeline and infrastructure projects in Jordan as well as neighbouring markets including Syria, Lebanon and Iraq.
The initiative is designed to strengthen local manufacturing capabilities and regional supply chains for projects in the water, oil and gas, energy and infrastructure sectors.
Large-diameter pipes and coating under evaluation
The partners are currently assessing the technical, commercial, financial and regulatory requirements for the proposed facilities. The evaluation covers manufacturing capacity, coating technologies and the necessary regulatory approvals.
Details concerning the investment volume, ownership structure and final production capacities have not yet been announced and are expected to be defined as the project progresses.
By combining pipe production and coating capabilities at one location, the proposed facilities could provide a regional manufacturing base for large pipeline projects and reduce dependence on pipes and coated products supplied over longer distances.
Water infrastructure as a key application
A major potential application is Jordan’s National Water Carrier Project, which involves the development of extensive pipeline infrastructure to improve the Kingdom’s long-term water security.
Beyond Jordan, the partners see opportunities to supply projects throughout the wider Levant region. The planned facilities could therefore address demand for large-diameter steel pipes and coated pipeline products across water transmission, energy and hydrocarbon infrastructure.
The MoU marks an initial step towards establishing local pipe manufacturing and coating capacity in Jordan. Further details on the scope and implementation of the project will follow once the ongoing evaluations have been completed.
