Geneva becomes the meeting point for engineers from around the world

This year's edition of the World Engineers' Convention took place in Brasilia. At the closing ceremony, WEC 2008 handed over responsibility for the event to WEC 2011. EPFL Professor Daniel Favrat had traveled to Brasilia for the handover. After Hanover, Shanghai and Brasilia, Geneva will become the fourth venue of the World Engineers' Convention. WEC 2011 will be devoted to the issue of energy, taking place under the heading "Engineers Power the World - Facing the Global Energy Challenge".

"All those interested in outstanding solutions in the fields of energy efficiency and renewable energies stand to experience an inspiring few days in Geneva in 2011. Through innovative engineering solutions, we seek to encourage a globally sustainable use of energy", said Professor Daniel Favrat at the closing ceremony in Brasilia. "WEC 2011 is thus of great interest not only for engineers, but also for players from the fields of industry, politics, the administration and education". Professor Favrat heads the WEC 2011 Program Committee: together with energy experts from Swiss universities, technical colleges and industry as well as from abroad, he is drawing up the program for WEC 2011. It should comprise five different subject areas: from mobility to urban planning and from energy production to energy consumption.

The accomplishments of engineers generate prosperity and life quality worldwide. Engineers are also able to offer solutions for the future. WEC 2011 aims to increase the awareness decision-makers and the general public may have of the performance of engineers, as well as honoring these efforts and accomplishments. More specifically, it wishes to encourage young generations to tackle the issues related to energy and the environment.

The supporting entities of WEC are the international organizations UNESCO, FEANI, as well as the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO), which brings together 15 million engineers from 90 countries. The organization of WEC 2011 has been entrusted to the Swiss organizations Swiss Engineering STV, SIA, SATW, Electrosuisse and FTAL. The Swiss Organization Committee is headed by National Councilor Ruedi Noser.
