Consumption-optimized transmissions will secure emission reduction

Sustainable driving, lower CO2 consumption, the future of electrified drives: the automotive industry has some difficult demands to meet. Even modern transmission concepts are thus faced with special challenges. Current trends and possibilities will be the subject of the international VDI Congress "Drivetrain for vehicles" to be held by the VDI Wissensforum on 18th and 19th June 2013 in Friedrichshafen. With almost 80 papers and 56 exhibitors the event is a marketplace for questions concerned with the transmission.

Gerhard Henning of Daimler gives a plenary talk on the automatic transmissions of today and tomorrow. Michael Schäfer of Volkswagen looks at the drive concepts with which 2020's CO2 targets can be achieved. Other full-session presentations come from Stefan Sommer of ZF Friedrichshafen, Peter Gutzmer of Schaeffler, Rolf Bulander of Robert Bosch and more besides.

The program in this three-track congress includes, for example, topics such as transmission concepts, clutches, continuously variable transmissions (CVT) as well as automated speed-change transmissions and hybrids. Virtually every European automobile manufacturer is represented at the conference. As well as Ford, Audi, Opel, Porsche and Volvo, even the Japanese automaker Honda will be present. Other Japanese speakers come from JATCO and NSK.

Two special seminars will be held on 17th June 2013, the day before the conference. The seminar entitled "Roller bearings and seals in vehicle transmissions" looks at the service life of roller bearings, roller bearing friction as well as seals and sealing systems.

On the special day "Transmission design and analysis" participants will learn about the geometric principles of involute toothing, the basics of load capacity analysis as well as vibrations from toothing and be introduced to analysis software.

The international VDI conference "Control solutions for transmissions" be held for the first time in parallel with the transmissions conference. Chaired by Werner Philipp of Robert Bosch the conference focuses on efficient and comfort-optimized control systems from Ford, Daimler and Volkswagen, for example.

At the same time the VDI Wissensforum extends an invitation to attend the 3rd international VDI conference "Transmissions in commercial vehicles". The program includes, for example, the challenges encountered in designing dual-clutch transmissions for commercial vehicles, the possibilities for optimizing performance using reliable friction linings, and also lubricants which lower fuel consumption.

The events and the special days can be booked separately. Attendees at the international VDI Congress and the technical conferences can attend the entire program of presentations on 18th and 19th June 2013 free of charge.
