BendingStudio & ROMER Absolute Arm with Scanner

New Tube and Wire Solution Brings the Speed of 3D Laser Scanning to the World of Tubes and Wires.

A new approach to tube and wire measurement was announced by leading metrology and manufacturing solution specialist Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence. An updated version of the popular AICON BendingStudio software platform now allows for the integration of a ROMER Absolute Arm with Integrated Scanner that can quickly determine complex tube and wire geometries using 3D laser scanning technology at almost any point in the production process. 

From tube and wire inspection to manufacturing and reverse engineering applications, BendingStudio with Absolute Arm is a full-featured solution built on well-established technologies. The system will benefit from the ability to connect directly to a CNC bending machine, allowing for the simple and immediate correction of production errors.

With this new version, BendingStudio will retain all its previous capabilities, allowing users to combine use of the ROMER Absolute Arm with Integrated Scanner with a complementary AICON TubeInspect. With these two measurement hardware endpoints operating on the same software platform, users will benefit from increased efficiency within a toolkit covering every need in tube and wire design and manufacturing. 

BendingStudio with Absolute Arm is available immediately from Hexagon sales offices and distributors, both as a standalone software package for current ROMER Absolute Arm with Integrated Scanner owners and as a full product package including both the BendingStudio software and a ROMER Absolute Arm with Integrated Scanner. Current owners of BendingStudio who wish to add a highly portable measuring solution to their existing toolkit will be able to simply upgrade their existing software package alongside the purchase of a ROMER Absolute Arm with Integrated Scanner.

AICON TubeInspect P16

TubeInspect P16 considerably optimizes manufacturing processes, e.g. the setup of bending machines, and significantly reduces costs through shortened setup times. The follow-up of the successful TubeInspect basic model sets new standards in the measurement of midsize and long tubes and wires.

TubeInspect P16, a non-contact measuring system, merely requires that the tube to be measured is placed in an optical measuring cell. Sixteen high-resolution digital cameras with latest GigE technology accurately measure the tube’s geometry in a few seconds.

The tube does not need to be moved. The geometry is reported in an easily understandable way that is as sheath tolerance. The measuring range of TubeInspect P16 is 2,600 mm x 1,250 mm x 700 mm and this can be extended by repositioning the tube. TubeInspect P16 measures tubes with diameters ranging from 3 mm to 200 mm. Bends between 1° and 340° can also be measured easily. TubeInspect P16 has a newly added capability of measuring tubes with connected bends or with flexible parts.

TubeInspect P16 is also able to measure tubes with hose sections, shaped hoses, and hoses with fixtures or mounting attachments. Thus AICON extends the spectrum of optical measurement applications significantly. Tube measurements can be compared with a previously recorded sample part or with an imported CAD model.

TubeInspect P16 provides online corrections to bending machines

TubeInspect P16 may be directly linked to Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) bending machines. If tube measurements indicate that adjustments need to be made to the tube manufacturing process, corrections are directly transmitted to the bending machine via the CNC program. If no automatic transfer of correctional data is possible, the determined parameters (e.g. push, rotate and bend) are entered manually into the bending program. In either case the bending machine corrections will be made more quickly so that dimensionally correct tubes are produced with minimal waste. Machine set-up becomes predictable, and down time is drastically reduced.

AICON TubeInspect P8

TubeInspect P8 was especially developed for the efficient quality control of bent tubes and wires less than 1,000 mm long from end to end and with a maximum diameter of 100 mm. 

Most of all bent tubes and wires are less than 1,000 mm long from end to end and have a maximum diameter of 100 mm. The first model of the new TubeInspect generation, the TubeInspect P8, was especially developed for the efficient quality control of this kind of component.

Equipped with 8 high-resolution cameras, TubeInspect P8 is suitable for tubes and wires with diameters from 1 mm to 125 mm and allows for optimum 3D inspection of objects of up to 1 m length. However, even longer objects can be measured with TubeInspect P8. The lateral doors allow for an overlapping
repositioni ng section by section.

Sheath tolerance can be determined to an accuracy of up to 0.035 mm. Measuring results are provided within 2 to 5 seconds. Considerably optimized production processes, e.g. the setup of bending machines, save time and costs. Combined with the software platform BendingStudio, the system offers various application-oriented functionalities.

Thanks to state-of-the-art technology, TubeInspect P8 fulfills highest requirements regarding accuracy and speed. The long-life and low-maintenance LED illumination technology guarantees a particularly smooth illumination of the measuring field.

High-resolution cameras with latest GigE technology ensure an almost synchronic capture of the measuring object within milliseconds. The innovative three-dimensional glass reference is highly precise and long-term stable.

TubeInspect P8 fits onto a euro-pallet. The result: reduced transport costs and floor space in operation. TubeInspect P8 is applicable for mobile use in production environment. The system is insensitive to vibrations; after change of location, TubeInspect P8 is immediately usable, without new calibration.

AICON BendingStudio

It takes several steps from a drawing to an actual part, each one requiring different types of data. BendingStudio links all data and processes around production of bended parts – from production and process planning to manufacturing and quality control.

Optimized data handling for every production step

Even if everyone is talking about the same part, different data is often required for the different stages on the way from the drawing to the tested product: CAD data from design, bend programs and bend corrections for manufacturing, test and inspection plans or measurement reports and analysis for quality control. But these records are not always 100% compatible.

Sometimes a certain radius cannot be produced and will be changed in preparation for production through a different radius that is more readily available. Or a free formed shape has to be approximated by straights and curves. In these situations new, parallel data sets with deviations from the original data are created.

This is the approach of the AICON BendingStudio: BendingStudio combines all data belonging to a certain part and allows manufacturers to monitor, quantify, visualize and document all changes in the different process steps. All data stays combined and nothing gets lost.

The right solution for every user

The users in the various process steps can have quite different requirements. While measuring parts during production, the user wants to see only those parts that are actually bended and perform a measurement with just a click of a button and see all important results at a glance.

In process planning and analysis however, complex data must be clearly displayed and edited. BendingStudio provides a tailored environment for each user according to his individual needs.

Best practices for both measurement and manufacturing

Whether a bended part is found to be acceptable also depends on the evaluation method used. The type of inspection features used as well as the predefined alignment method can have significant impact on the deviations shown.

BendingStudio closes this gap: A part can have different measurement plans assigned. Thus, both the requirements of the drawing as well as certain mounting conditions can be displayed from the same measurement. Subsequently even enhanced analyses can be performed using stored measurement data.

Easy handling – many possibilities

BendingStudio utilizes with a simple and clearly structured handling concept. In addition, many small tools ease the daily work in all areas of bended part manufacturing. For example, it is possible to construct bend data from center line data. Or, before applying corrections, the effects of a modifi ed bending program can be simulated. And all this is done in a very simple and quick way.
