Austenitic stainless steels are biggest group of the stainless steels.

They contain 10,5 - 26% Chrome (Cr) and 8 - 36% Nickel (Ni) content. Austenitic stainless steels are non-magnetic in solution annealed condition. Carbon (C) content is low in Austenitic group. They can not be hardened with heat treatment.

They mainly have good corrosion and heat resistance. The resistance for corrosion and heat may be increased with added content of Chrome (Cr), Nickel (Ni) and other specific (Molybdenum, Titanium etc) elements. 

Austenitic grades have good weldability. There is no need for further treatment after welding.

304 grade is the most widely used grade in the Austenitic group. It is the optimal grade for general purposes under atmospheric environments. This grade is the most popular stainless steel grade, due to its good corrosion and thermal resistance, strength at low tempratures, good mechanical properties, aesthetical apperance and polishabilty. And most importantly, with its price / performance ratio.

304L grade, the low Carbon (C) version, has better resistance for intergranular corrosion.

Martensitic stainless steels contain 12,5 - 18% Chrome (Cr) and 0,10 - 1% Carbon (C) content. Martensitic group is the smallest group of all the stainless steels.

Carbon (C) content is comparatively higher in Martensitic grades, in order to obtain better strength and hardness. Martensitic grades contain very low or no Nickel (Ni) and Molybdenum (Mo). The whole group is magnetic.

All of the Martensitic grades, except 410 grade, can be hardened with heat treatment (quenching and tempering) up to 45 - 60 Rockwell. If the Carbon (C) content is below 0,17%, the hardness will not exceed 45 Rockwell. The potential hardness of the material is directly corrolated with the Carbon (C) content. More Carbon (C) content with achieve harder materials after the heat treatment.

Heat resistance is limited in this group. These grades are not recommended for grades higher than 400 °C. Machining and cold forming is done in annealed condition. But optimal corrosion resistance is gained after the heat treatment.

AISI 420 is the most widely used grade of this group. They are available in Bars and rarely in Coils/Sheets form. Bars are sold either in annealed or Q&T (quenched and tempered) condition. You may find the full size range of 420 bars in Teknik Metal stocks in annealed condition.

AISI 431 grade is the Nickel (Ni) containing grade in the Martensitic group. This grade has better mechanical properties and machinabilty than 420. Nickel addition brings along better hardenability and toughness. Ferritic stainless steels contain 11 - 30% Chrome (Cr) and low carbon. Main element is Chrome (Cr) and then Molybdenum (Mo). All of the Ferritic group is magnetic. Due to the low Carbon (C) content, Ferritic stainless steels are not hardenable with heat treatment.

Ferritic grades were introduced as an economic alternative to Austenitic grades. Main motive was to keep the corrosion resistance with the help of Chrome (Cr) and Molybdenum (Mo), but reduce the cost with the absence of Nickel (Ni), where the superior mechanical properties that Nickel (Ni) brings are simply not necessary.

AISI 430 is the most popular grade of this group. It has a good corrosion resistance and cold formability. This grade is suitable for deep drawing. Weldabilty is poor in this grade.

For machinabilty, instead of 430 grade, Sulfur (S) content added 430F grade must be preferred. Sulfur adds improved machinabilty, but reduces the corrosion resistance in 430F grade.

Ferritic grades can be divided into 3 subcategories depending on the Chrome (Cr) content:

11 - 13 % Chrome: (409, 410S, 1.4003) They have average oxidation ve corrosion resistance, along with more economical costs. Main application is automotive exhaust parts. Most widely used grade is 409.

14 - 18 % Chrome: (430, 434, 436, 439, 430Ti, 441, 444) These grades contain medium level of Chrome and mainly used in Automotive parts and kitchenware. Weldabilty and impact reisstance is poor. Some grades have additional Molibden (Mo) content for better corrosion resistance.

19 - 30 % Chrome: (Super Ferritics 442 and 446 ) This group is examined seperately than the ferritics. They are used for high oxidation ve corrosion resistance applications.

Ferritic grades are usually found in Coils/Sheets, Bars and Welded Tubes. You may find Ferritic grades in Teknik Metal stocks in round bars, coils and sheets form. Available grades in sheets and coils are 430, 409, 410S and 1.4003. Available grades in round bars are 430L and 430F.
